Located at the foot of Mt. Etna, Catania is one of the most conquered cities in Italy. It was born as a Greek city, then became a Roman colony and was subsequently dominated by the Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Swabians, Angevins, Aragonese and Spanish. These many different cultures and civilisations have made it into an open and tolerant city.
Although it has been razed to the ground by both conquerors and natural events, including an eruption in 1669 and an earthquake in 1693, it has always found the strength to rise again and be even more powerful and beautiful than before. What visitors can now admire is a Baroque city with wide streets adorned by splendid gardens and squares including the "Piazza del Duomo" designed by the celebrated architect Vaccarini. Its historic centre became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.
It also offers traditional Sicilian cuisine, which includes the famous "Pasta alla Norma" (with tomato and aubergine sauce) and "arancini" (rice balls); one type of which is called "Ripidadu Nevicato" (rice balls tinged with squid ink and shaped like a volcano topped with tomato sauce and ricotta cheese to resemble Mt. Etna covered in snow and burning lava). Sicily is also famous for its sweets including cannoli pastries, almond paste cookies and granatina (shaved ice and syrup). It is a city that will conquer your eyes and palate.
