Giovinazzo, located near Bari, is an old fishing port and, now, a popular beach resort, which keeps both the old and new quarters equally busy. This ancient city (legend tells that it was founded by Perseus, son of Jupiter) is home to many archaeological finds dating back to the Bronze Age.
The greatest testimony to its history is the Dolmen of San Silvestro, a collective tomb from the 2nd century bce, which is also the largest of its kind in Italy.
One of the city centre's most beautiful squares is Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, onto which faces the City Hall, the Palace of the Marquis of Rende and the Church of St. Domenic. As well, in its centre stands a magnificent fountain with tritons.
Giovinazzo is also home to such historical treasures as a 12th-century cathedral that faces onto the sea and the gothic Church of the Holy Spirit with its three domes.
If you wish to enjoy the festive ambiance of this town, then keep in mind that during the entire month of August there are celebrations dedicated to the Madonna of Corsignano, which include many musical and folkloristic events along the city's splendid fortified seaside promenade.
