Siena is one of Tuscany's most beautiful cities thanks to its panoramic location, its massive fortified walls and its spectacular main square called "Piazza del Campo".
All of which make the city unique and loved the world over. Its historic centre has a typical medieval urban layout.
The architecture of its public buildings, houses and streets engulfs visitors in the antique charm of the past, where there are hardly any signs of modernity. This is one of the reasons why Siena's historic centre was added to the UNESCO World heritage List in 1995.
The inner city is divided into seventeen districts [called "contrade" in Italian], each with its own symbol, which compete in one of the world's most famous bareback horse races known as the "Palio of Siena". The race, which was inspired by medieval jousting games, takes place twice a year (on July 2nd and August 16th) in "Piazza del Campo".
There is more to Siena than just history.
The area is also famous worldwide for its great wines including Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Vernaccia di San Gimignano and Nobile di Montepulciano. Gourmet tourists will also enjoy its many traditional medieval specialities including the long pasta called "pici", a bread and vegetable soup called "ribollita", wild game and wild boar. Its tempting desserts include a fruitcake called "panforte", almond cookies called "ricciarelli" and almond biscuits called "cantucci", which are dipped in the famous fortified wine called "vin santo".
These are all good reasons to visit one of Italy's most beautiful cities.
