Space Hotels' portfolio boasts two affiliates with restaurants that have been awarded a coveted Michelin star. The "Antiche Contrade" located in the Hotel Palazzo Lovera in Cuneo and the "Met" located in the Hotel Metropole in Venice. These stars confirm that Space hotels are both high in quality and in line with the expansion of enogastronomic tourism, a fact which has been recently published by the Specialty Travel Agents Association (STAA).
This American association of travel industry professionals has ranked tourism segments that will be successful in 2009 and enogastronomic tourism came in first place. According to the STAA "travellers like to try sensory experiences that add a new perspective to their chosen destination". Experiences that include visits to local markets, cooking lessons and tastings of local wines and products.
The two stars of the Michelin firmament
The "Antiche Contrade" restaurant of the Hotel Palazzo Lovera (one Michelin star in 2004) offers haute cuisine based on the specialties of this Maritime Alps region which descends from the western Italian Alps to the northern Ligurian Sea. Its menu includes nine "specialities of the chef" created by its young, acclaimed chef Luigi Taglienti. Its wine cellar offers a selection of over 1,000 wines from the best years originating primarily from the area of the former kingdom of "Sabaudo" with special attention given to French wines. The Palazzo Lovera in Cuneo is a four-star hotel and the perfect place to experience all the emotions offered by this region, its natural products and its incomparable wines.
The Metropole in Venice, one of the most exclusive hotels in the city with a breathtaking view of the lagoon, has a beautiful garden and the delightful "Zodiaco Oriental Bar". It is the perfect spot for dinner on a summer night amongst the citrus trees and the scent of jasmine. The Zodiaco Oriental Bar has a magnificent ambience: its ceiling is decorated with constellations and zodiac signs evoking the mysteries of astrology and its furnishings include oriental rugs, antique pillows, silk fabrics, candles and incense, which give an enthralling far-eastern touch. Dinner at the Met Restaurant is a unique experience. Its chef, Corrado Fasolato, received a Michelin star for his sensational menu that is rich in personality.
Enogastronomics is a big attraction
In Italy, enogastronomic tourism is the heart of the industry and worth 5 billion euros. Italy is the only world country that has 176 food products registered on a European level and 4,396 traditional specialties registered on regional levels. It also has 477 wines with a nationally registered "designation of origin" (DOC).
Short holidays are on the increase indicating the popularity of a new anti-crisis low-cost travel style that focuses on maximising available time and money. Even a short holiday will be well spent in Italy because it offers many unique tourism opportunities. In particular, Italy boasts 142 enogastronomic tourist itineraries and 60,700 wineries, oil mills and farms open to the public for visits and sales of enogastronomic products. It also has 772 natural parks and protected areas covering 10 percent of its territory and is the European leader in the production of organic products.
