Hospitality is an Art
Design hotels, also known as boutique hotels, began appearing in the 1980s. They are known for their unique blend of comfort and aesthetics based on tasteful design and high quality materials. They are a whole new concept of hotel: not just a place to rest, but the first attraction to love in a city.
Space Hotels knows that contemporary art is a means to stimulate observers and that such art in a hotel offers added value to good hospitality. Several hotels in the Space chain have enriched their decor with art collections or rooms decorated by artists. In some cases, depending on the aesthetics of the hotelier, the artwork becomes the centrepiece of the decor and creates a space with great impact; while in other cases, the effect is small, marvellous spaces where guests would not expect to find art, such as waiting for the elevator.
Piero Marzot, president of Space Hotels and owner of the Hotel Spadari al Duomo in Milan, talks about his hotel:
“At the Hotel Spadari al Duomo, our intent is to create attractive spaces containing art in a well-balanced manner. Our artwork is not just exhibited, it is harmonically integrated into our spaces so that our guests experience the full artistic atmosphere; thanks also to the absence of informative plaques, which would create the static appearance of a museum. The art collection of the Hotel Spadari al Duomo is enlarged every year. Our favourite artists are Pomodoro, Paladino, Chia, Schifano and a variety of new young talents”. Our centrepiece is a full-wall fireplace by the artist Giò Pomodoro in the hotel lounge.
Many hotels in the Space Hotels chain promote contemporary art. The Hub Hotel in Milan, located near the new exhibition centre, hosts 11 works of contemporary art in the garden, lobby, conference centre and lounge bar. As well, near the elevator, there is a multi-piece work spread out along the walls like a puzzle inviting guests to play with the art.
The city of Città di Castello, in the province of Perugia, is the birthplace of the famous contemporary artist Alberto Burri. The Hotel Tiferno has a collection of his original prints on display in its common areas and copies of his paintings, which are conserved in the city's museums, hanging in its guestrooms.
At the Regiohotel Manfredi in Manfredonia, in the province of Foggia, each Suite and Junior Suite has been designed in the style of a great modern artist including Picasso, Lichtenstein, De Lempicka, Dalì, Modigliani, Van Gogh and De Chirico. These artists have stimulated the thoughts and feelings of people worldwide and this is the effect that the hotel wants to offer its guests.
The Black Hotel in Rome is an innovative design hotel. Guests enter through the “sculpture door”, created by Paolo Guiotto, into the lobby with its black backdrop and huge counters in various types of hardwood. The exterior of the hotel is a minimalist space including a dramatic black-tiled swimming pool that is level with its wooden deck.
The art in the Cappello Rosso Hotel in Bologna was created in collaboration with the Civic Theatre, the Biografilm Festival and the International Comics Festival. During the latest edition of the latter, the artists Rupert et Mullot designed rooms in the hotel. They created a whimsical theme with a story ending with a chambermaid discovering two authors writing on room walls.
