River Stories To Be Discovered
The multimedia "River Stories" project, sponsored by Space Hotels and created by the "School of Travel", is made up of videos, photographs, writings and drawings, as well as a web 2.0 interactive map of the cities along the Po River in the province of Torino. People wishing to experience these stories, and perhaps add their own by following tips from the blog at www.spacetravelnotes.com, can stay at Space Hotels' two comfortable affiliates in Turin: the Victoria Hotel and the Grand Hotel Sitea, both located near the Po River.
"River Stories" - which brings together the faces, voices, landscapes and crafts that make up the history of the Po River - is a project designed for the "Torino Smart City" initiative; which is a flexible, integrated project of financing and management aimed at sustainable development for the city of Turin.
The project was created by the "School of Travel", under the patronage of AITR [Italian Association of Responsible Tourism], with financial support from Space Hotels and the "Torino Smart City Foundation". The initiative aims to construct a community map that will collect stories, testimonials and memories from people living along the tract of the Po River that runs between the cities of Turin and Moncalieri. The online map, in GoogleMaps style, can be seen on the (Italian only) Torino Smart City website (www.torinosmartcity.it/partecipare/storie-di-fiume/), which offers a lot of consultable material in various formats.
The "River Stories" have been collected from businesses, industries, sports associations, parks and, especially, the people living along the river. It is also an open project, a living entity and a dynamic image of the land that will change over time thanks to contributions by travellers, who are free to add to the narration with materials based on their own experiences. Travellers are also welcome to consult the blog at www.spacetravelnotes.com, which was launched last year by Space Hotels and the "School of Travel" and offers weekly tips on how to document their experiences in writings, drawings and photographs. "Nowadays, travelling has become a lifestyle," says the President of Space Hotels, Piero Marzot. "Thanks to low-cost airlines, which make travelling easier, many people have their luggage always ready to go."
Space Hotels, the Italian branch of the Supranational Hotels group, has 86 three to five star hotels in over 50 cities throughout the country. The entire Supranational chain offers more than 1,000 hotels in 75 nations and over 500 cities, which can be reached through 21 reservation offices, the GDS (code SX), the Internet at www.spacehotels.it or their tollfree number 800-813-013. The Space Hotels offer includes: business or leisure stays with interesting special rates; organisation of meetings and conferences; fine cuisine by some of the best Italian chefs; relaxation, massages and saunas in elegant spas and wellness centres.
The "School of Travel" is an association founded in 2005 by Claudio Visentin, a professor at the Italian University of Switzerland in Lugano. It was born as a spin-off collaboration between universities in Lugano, Pavia and Pisa. It is now a national association of sustainable and responsible tourism (affiliated with AITR) that aims to build a creative community, to encourage travellers to reflect on their experiences and to promote knowledge, awareness, appreciation and respect for places visited. Its partners include publishing houses (Touring, EDT, Guanda, Vallardi and Moleskine) and travel businesses (Space Hotels and Mondial Assistance).
