THE FIRST FORTY YEARS OF SUPRANATIONAL HOTELS

Since its founding 40 years ago, the international Supranational Hotels group still has a clear idea on the best business moves. These have included: valorise its core business based on a corporate clientele that books through the GDS; give more impetus to sales and marketing; find hotel affiliates in new world business areas such industrial parks and airports in up and coming oil-producing nations like Azerbaijan; take full advantage of its innovative computer system. Learning from the past to understand and foresee the future

Supranational Hotels was founded in 1974 by five hotel groups, including the Italian Space Hotels that is also celebrating its fortieth anniversary, and represents more than 760 hotels in 75 countries from Europe to the Middle East to Asia and the Americas. "To celebrate this important anniversary," says Mr. Cho Wong, Managing Director of Supranational Hotels, "we are organising a big event in London on 17 June during our Consortia Workshop. It will be an opportunity for our hoteliers to meet global representatives of the GDS and some of our major corporate clients that have had long-term partnerships with us, such as IBM, Microsoft, Mercedes Bank, Coca Cola, Shell, BP and the World Bank. We will have a workshop where our Scandinavian, German, British, South African and Italian hoteliers will play the role of sellers. There will also be a conference held by well-respected industry experts on new trends in tourism."

The market is moving. And rather quickly. "In recent years," continues Mr. Cho Wong, "we have witnessed a real mobile revolution: a growing number of reservations arrive from smartphones and tablets. This means that hotels must have websites and reservation engines that are 'mobile friendly'. As well, online reviews have now become extremely important: their positive and negative criticisms, comments and suggestions can no longer be ignored and hoteliers need to know how to always give the right response. However, not everything has changed with respect to the past: the GDS is still an important channel for corporate clients, especially for the security it can guarantee in terms of travel policies and management of travel plans."

In the light of these and other current and future evolutions, Supranational Hotels is committed to making instruments that help face old and new market challenges available to its affiliates. With regards to this, a recent introduction into our digital platform is the option to connect to online travel agencies (OLTA), in order to not lose potential business and have more control. As well, we have also created a link with meta-search engines like Trivago and TripAdvisor and a 'seamless' link to the booking engines of our affiliates allowing our partner hotels to manage all the available web-based distribution channels.
