We are very pleased to tell you our history ...
Zoe Lustig - Hungarian-born -, arrived with her family from Hungary at the end of the 19th century and Ugo Serandrei, - moved from Pisa to Venice at the beginning of the next century -, got married in 1905.
Three years later, Zoe put to use her experience in administrative work (she had also worked in Naples, where she was employed by Alfredo Campione, one of the founding members of Ciga) and Ugo, who was maitre d’
At the end of the great war, they decided to buy the hotel from the original owner, who was returning to his native Germany and, with the help of their son Renzo, expanded and refurbished it. At the same time the name was changed and the word Saturnia, the ancient virgilian name of Italy, was added to avoid confusion with the Nazionale, another hotel not far from the train station.
During the world war two, the hotel was requisitioned by the Germans first and by the British and South African troops later, but after the war it gained international fame with its renowned Ciro's bar. The increased number os rooms, the newly-built 4th floor terrace and the restaurant alfresco dining area in the inner courtyard, all contributed to the awarding of the current 4 star classification. Since the past 40 years the hotel is run by the grandchildren of the original Ugo, Alberto and Ugo, assisted by the latter's children, who represent now the 4th generation.
