Ferrara, which rests in a quiet corner of the region of Emilia Romagna between the Po River and the Adriatic Sea, was one of the cradles of the Italian Renaissance. This is attested to by the Este Castle, built by Ludovico Sforza, the Palazzo Schifanoia and the city's historic centre. The latter has remained almost entirely intact and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
The city enjoyed great prestige and became a centre of Renaissance art and culture during the Este family rule. Their court hosted some of the most illustrious 15th- and 16th-century writers, such as Torquato Tasso and Ludovico Ariosto, and such great painters as Mantegna and Bellini.
Visiting Ferrara is like going back in time: as you stroll along its streets, you can absorb the city's medieval atmosphere and feel the presence of the great artists and writers that frequented the Este court. It is also a great city to discovery by bicycle!
Ferrara is often animated by such events as historical re-enactments (e.g. the "Palio di San Giorgio" horse race) and the annual Busker Festival and Hot Air Balloon Festival, the latter involves all types of strange and wonderful balloons.
