Herculaneum Hotels
Herculaneum, which is located just eight kilometres from Naples, has one of the most interesting historic, cultural and artistic heritages in the area around Mt. Vesuvius. On 24 August 79 bce, Vesuvius awoke after a long sleep taking the population in the area by surprise. The eruption was apocalyptic and all the cities at the foot of the volcano were obliterated and forgotten by time. After 1,700 years, Herculaneum and Pompeii were revealed and have since become two of the most important archaeological sites in the world.
The excavations, which were started in 1783 by King Charles of Bourbon, unearthed many features of the buried cities including the grand "Villa dei Papiri" with its marvellous works in marble and bronze and its library that contained more than 1,800 philosophical texts, which are now conserved in the National Library in Naples.
The greatest tourist attraction in the area is still by far Mt. Vesuvius. Every year, thousands of visitors climb the volcano to observe both the crater and the magnificent view that can be enjoyed from that height.
