Mestre is the industrial and trade center of Venice. While so different from the historical center, Mestre has never been able to break away from Venice, even after several referendums to make it municipality in its own, always with negative results.
Although affected by the urban sprawl of the Seventies (more than 200 thousand inhab), the city in the recent years has been embellishing thanks to the introduction of the pedestrian streets in the city center, the construction of the new futuristic hospital of European excellence, the opening of the San Giuliano Park, seat of important events such as the Heineken Jammin’ Festival and the reforestation of the Bosco di Mestre.
The Museum of the 20th century, the M9, is under construction. You must have a walk in the center to discover the “bacari” (taverns where you can eat typical food) or an evening at the Toniolo Theater.
A splendid choice both for tourists and business men, Mestre is a good alternative to Venice which is only 10 minutes far by train or by bus.
