Ragusa, located in southern Sicily, has a long and fascinating history. Its position on the slopes of the Iblei Mountains protected the inhabitants, the Siculi, from the advancing Greeks who settled on the coast. It then became a byzantine village, which was later taken by force by the Arabs in the year 848.
The city is currently divided into two areas: Lower Ragusa with a medieval layout, which was rebuilt in the 1700s after a massive earthquake, where the houses are closely lined-up in between stairways, alleyways, narrow winding streets and incredibly beautiful boulevards; and the urban Upper Ragusa, which was built on modern a grid street plan. The two areas are separated by a deep hollow, which has led to the construction of three great bridges in various time periods and, hence, the nickname of the "City of Three Bridges".
The must-sees include the city's two Baroque churches, the magnificent façade and steps of the Church of St. George and the Cathedral, with its tower that can be seen from the entire city. Ragusa is also known as a seaside resort. Its coastline offers a tantalising mix of fine sand beaches, rocky promontories, secluded coves and crystal-clear water.
